Consolation Prizes #5: Clarity

January 30, 2009

I decided that instead of harping on how it sucks to be single, I’m going to highlight to beautiful things about being single.*  Now I’m not daft, I realize that most of these reasons are going to be variations of the same underlying theme, “no longer having to compromise”, but let me have my fun.

#5 Clarity

You know when you are single and your friends in relationships come to you looking for advice and you are able to give advice that makes perfect sense and is completely rational (even though you know they aren’t going to take it)?

Obama Signs His First Bill Into Law

January 29, 2009
President Obama signed his first bill into law on Thursday, approving the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a law named for Ms. Ledbetter, fourth from left, an Alabama woman who at the end of a 19-year career as a supervisor in a tire factory complained that she had been paid less than men.

Lost Season Five: Jughead

January 29, 2009

a4c1ef868e4ea610ed1c3f56acfc94fb1ddcb8fcfc1f3e9cea83b34dc2dbca255

What I Liked:

  • From an IM conversation I had with Erwin right after “The Lie” aired last Wednesday: “11:04:52 PM Sean Campbell: think that solider might be Widmore?”  I love being right!
  • There was no Oceanic Six.  Not that I don’t like that part of the story, it’s that the island story is much more interesting and compelling
  • This episode was a great showcase for Daniel Faraday.  He really came into his own as a leader of the Freighties yet we found out he has a past that doesn’t make him so noble (but who doesn’t on this island?)
  • Like I’ve said before, I like the time flashes on the island because it will allow us to learn so much about the island’s history

What I Didn’t Like

  • There’s this ominous feeling I have about the fate of Desmond and Penny.  i just want them to get away and live happily ever after but now that they are headed to L.A. where a revenge-seeking Ben is, it’s only going to get worse.
  • I’m afraid I’ll be disappointed by what parts of the island history doesn’t get covered in the time flashes.

Lines of the Night:

  • “Gee, I didn’t have time to ask that with Frogurt on fire and all.” – Sawyer
  • “I certainly hate to contradict myself.” – Richard ‘Batmanuel” Alpert response to Locke telling him that Alpert told Locke he’s the leader of the Others 50 years into the future
  • “Hate to bust up the ‘I’m an Other, you’re an Other reunion…” – Sawyer to Juliet and the two captured Others
  • “Your name is Widmore?” Charles Widmore?” “What’s it to you?” “Nothing. Nice to meet you.” – Locke and a young Charles Widmore
  • “Fantastic idea, really inspired” – Daniel Faraday regarding Ellie’s threat to shoot him in front of a leaking hydrogen bomb

24 Season Seven: 1:00PM – 2:00PM

I shoot you dead

Kill Count: Jack – 2; Tony – 4 (!)

The Resurrection of Agent Freckles

So somehow Jack told Bill and Chloe where to find Agent Freckles.  When they dig her up she’s not breathing but they give her the Pulp Fiction Special and she’s back to life.  Bill and Chloe tell Freckles about the plan and that the FBI has been compromised and she goes along with it.  I’m sorry.  Last time I checked, wasn’t Freckles the only one with any authority?  What were Bill and Chloe going to do if she said “Screw You Guys, I’ma Going Home“? Shoot her?  I guess we’ll never know.

Melanism on…2009 Oscar Nominations

January 26, 2009

Here’s the complete list:

Yay!

  • I look forward to hearing the presenter say “Heath Ledger as The Joker”
  • Michael Shannon getting a Best Supporting Actor Nomination for Revolutionary Road.  Like I said in my review, he stole that movie in 10 minutes or so he was in it. Too bad he’s going to lose to Heath Ledger.
  • Robert Downey Jr. getting a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Tropic Thunder.  I think this is the first nomination for an full-on comedic performance since Kevin Kline’s nomination and win for A Fish Called Wanda.  Too bad he’s going to lose to Heath Ledger.
  • Viola Davis getting a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Doubt.  She really was the best actress in the movie which is saying a lot considering her scene was with Meryl Streep.

Boo!

  • I know it was a long shot for Wall-E or The Dark Knight to get a Best Picture nomination but The Reader?!? Really?  it’s not that I saw it and didn’t think it deserved it (because I haven’t yet) but in all the early talk and speculation, The Reader NEVER came up.  One day the Academy will have to answer for its bias towards films surrounding the Holocaust.
  • Rosemarie Dewitt should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Rachel Getting Married.  Having seen Doubt, I would be okay with Amy Adams not getting nominated.
  • The Dark Knight getting shut out of all the other awards sans the technical ones and Ledger’s nomination.  I think they should have at least gotten a nomination of Best Adapted Screenplay

What the Fuck!

  • There better be some rule violation that prevented Bruce Springsteen’s song “The Wrestler” from not being nominated for an Academy Award.  They only nominated three songs and two of them were from Slumdog Millionaire.

Movie of the Week: My Bloody Valentine 3D

January 26, 2009

It was fun for what it was.  The 3D stuff was cool (but I wish there was more of it).

The movie never took itself seriously which was important because the plot and acting were pretty awful.

There is absolutely no reason to see this movie if you aren’t seeing it in 3D.  Honestly, all bad horror movies should be in 3D

Lost Season Five: The Lie

January 22, 2009

eventwindow

What I Liked:

  • Ms. Hawking is back!
  • So is Vincent!
  • How can I not like an episode that focuses on Hurley?  I imagine there won’t be many episodes where we’ll be able to spend time primarily on one character’s struggle with the situation but if we are going to have them, I’m glad they chose Hurley.
  • We are finally going to learn more about the island’s history through all this time jumping?

What I Didn’t Like:

  • This was definitely the least eventful of the two episodes
  • Too much was made of the weight of the lie they all told.
  • As much as I like Michelle Rodriguez, it was kinda silly to bring her back for that one scene.  Was she on vacation?

Lines of the Night:

  • “Libby says ‘Hi.’” – Ana Lucia to Hurley
  • “He’s dead, isn’t he?” “I’ll see you in six hours, Jack.” – Jack and Ben regarding Locke’s body
  • “Welcome back, Dr. Wizard.” “I believe it’s Mr. Wizard.” Sawyer nickname for Daniel and Miles correcting him
  • “Look, everything’s going to make sense. I promise.” “It better!” – Hurley & Hurley’s mom (and everyone who’s been watching the show for the last five years)

Lost Season Five: Because You Left

January 22, 2009

compass

What I Liked

  • As pointed out by Slate, everything you need to know about the current season of Lost is shown in the opening minutes of the season premiere.  That said, I think this has to be my favorite opening sequence in terms of mindfrak.
  • It’s clear that Daniel Faraday and Desmond are going to have huge roles this season in terms of the sci-fi aspect of this season and that’s awesome because they are two of my three favorite characters (Ben Linus being the third)
  • The flashback/flashforwards are over.  I’m glad because both storytelling devices had run their course.
  • The show has finally tipped heavily towards the sci-fi end of the balancing act it has with it’s character study aspect of the show
  • We’ve hit the ground running.

What I Didn’t Like

  • I loved everything about this episode although the island stuff is infinitely more interesting than the “Let’s Get The Band Back Together” off the island stuff.

Lines of the Night:

  • Sawyer nicknames: Ginger (Charlotte), Danny Boy (Daniel), Frogurt (Neil)
  • “Well, what goes around comes around.” – Alpert, regarding Locke getting shot by Ethan
  • “Maybe if you ate more comfort food, you wouldn’t have to go around shooting people.” – Hurley after Sayid refused a french fry
  • “It’s a compass.” “What’s it do?” “It points north, John.” – Alpert & Locke regarding the compass pictured up top.
