A Great Essay About MJ

June 30, 2009

This is a tribute that Phonte of Little Brother wrote on his MySpace blog.  I agree with everything except the title because it was really the parents’ fault.

My Hero Ain’t Molest Them Bitch Ass Kids: Phonte’s teary-eyed tribute to The King

I haven’t been compelled to blog in a long time.

In an era where everybody is twittering and text-messaging their lives away, a well-thought out essay that extends past 140 characters is quickly becoming a thing of the past.

But when our universe lost its brightest star on June 25, 2009, I felt a deep, overwhelming sadness that I haven’t experienced in many years and I felt moved to say….something.

My hero, Michael Joseph Jackson, is dead.

Movie of the Week II: Up

June 26, 2009

A year after declaring that Wall*E might my favorite Pixar movie ever comes maybe my favorite Pixar movie.

I think at the end of the day, Up was a better movie from start to finish than Wall*E but Wall*E was my favorite Pixar character (although Doug, the talking dog, is a VERY close second).  We’ll see how I feel when I own it on Blu-Ray.

The opening sequence showing the relationship between Carl and Ellie through the highs and the lows — no dialougue just Michael Giacchino’s score)  was one of the most heartwrenching/touching things I’ve ever seen in a film – animated of otherwise.  If that had just been a short, it might have been my favorite film in 15 years.  The movie continued to be awesome and hilarious but those opening minutes stayed with me.

Shakespeare in the Park: Twelfth Night

I got to Central Park at about 6:30 AM to wait on line for tickets to Shakespeare in the Park production of ‘Twelfth Night’. As a person who’s done this three times now, my best recommendations is to try and go in the middle of the run on a weekday (it’s playing Tuesday-Sunday until July 12th).  The closer you get to the end of the run, the earlier you have to get there.  Anyway, when I got there, there were only about 40 people ahead of me.  Luckily, my roommate lent me her chair so I was sitting quite comfortably while I caught up on some reading and took a couple of naps while swatting away mosquitoes…

I’m rambling, you don’t care about how I got tickets.

Movie of the Week: Moon

June 23, 2009

I really liked it but I’m biased because I am a huge fan of Sam Rockwell’s work. I’d say this was his best performance since Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to spoil anything and it’s really hard to get into the particulars without spoiling the story.  I was afraid the trailer already gave away too much but there was much more going on.

The only disappointment was at the end, I wanted to know more about what was going to happen.

Perspective Schsmective

June 16, 2009

You know what’s been driving me crazy?

Sometimes when I talk to my friends who happen to be unemployed about something about my job that bugs me, some of them always reply dismissively with some version of “Hey, at least you have a job” effectively ending the conversation.

The first 10-25 times I was like, “Yeah, you’re right.”

Now I’m just tired of this shit.
