Who I Saw: (click name to see photos)

Highlight: Seeing Sia live for the first time and right in front no less

Sia

I also got a video of her singing “Breathe Me.”

Lowlight: Before the Radiohead set, this group of people were SNORTING OXYCONTIN PILLS. One of them annoyed the living shit of me during most of the set by jumping into me, elbowing me in the eye and singing loudly and offbeat. I tried to elbow him in the ribs but of course, it meant nothing to him.

Another Lowlight: They had this stupid policy where you got a bracelet with five tabs. That was as many beers as you were allowed to have the entire day. Wait…it gets worse. You were only allowed to drink in these three “beer gardens” (they looked more like concentration camps for drunks) and couldn’t walk around with your beer.

Who I Saw: (click name for pictures)

Highlight: While Radiohead was performing “The Bends” and “Fake Plastic Trees,” fireworks went off in the background. It was kind of surreal especially considering it was my first time seeing them.

Lowlight: An hour before the Rage Against The Machine, a group of drunken fools tried to force their way to the front, crushing a bunch of us. My arms were essentially trapped at my sides and I couldn’t breathe. Once Rage started performing, it only got worse. I spent the first 20 minutes or so with my feet off the ground. I was either being leaned forward onto someone’s back or leaned back with my weight being held up whoever was behind me. At least three people were carried over my head from heat exhaustion and I know tons of others that we carried out on the other side. Zach had to stop the show several times to plead with the crowd to move back so the people in the very front wouldn’t be crushed to death.

Tegan & Sara @ Terminal 5

May 13, 2008

First of all, I had been trying to get tickets for this show off Craigslist for months but I finally scored some (at face value no less) a week before the show and I’m glad I did.

Jenny and I ended up standing on the third floor of Terminal 5 because, frankly, the rabid Tegan & Sara fans were packed tight up on the standing floor and looked at you like you lost your mind if you tried to push past them.

It was a great show and I hope I get a chance to see them again (with a better view). They did all my favorite songs so I couldn’t complain plus I didn’t have to deal with being suffocated on the floor with the crowd

Here are the rest of the pictures I took.

I also took some video with my new camera: Nineteen, Hop A Plane, Back In Your Head, Living Room

Dewey Cox & The Hard Walkers at The Knitting Factory

December 20, 2007

After the screening, we were bused over to the Knitting Factory to see the final performance of Dewey Cox & The Hard Walkers (until the Oscars with the strike doesn’t destroy it).

The show was hilarious. The best parts were his covers of Rehab (Amy Winehouse),Cocaine (Eric Clapton) and Sabotage (Beastie Boys).

The world needs more Cox.

Rilo Kiley @ Webster Hall

September 24, 2007

Marry me, Jenny Lewis.

To be honest, Under The Blacklight, Rilo Kiley’s latest release, is already my least favorite album of theirs. Doesn’t mean it’s bad. Far from it. But I didn’t feel attached to it instantly.

Anyway, to hear the songs performed live made me love songs I liked and like songs I didn’t care for. My favorite songs from the night were “Dreamworld”, “Portions For Foxes”, “Silver Lining”, “It’s A Hit” (with Orenda Fink formerly of Azure Ray and now Art in Manila on trumpet), “Breakin’ Up”, “Does He Love You”…I’m going to stop because I’ll probably end up listing them all.

I can watch Jenny Lewis on stage all night long.

I forget how short Blake Sennett. He really hasn’t grown much from his Boy Meets World days

That said, Webster Hall is a weird venue for a rock show because you can hear the club music bumping down below. It’s particularly awkward during slow, quiet songs. if your favorite band is playing here, double check to make sure they aren’t playing anywhere else in the city.

Despite the venue, it was a great show.

Long Short Weekend

September 17, 2007

I have really got to plan my days better.

Without getting into the whole spiel, I decided that I could see Interpol at Madison Square Garden on Friday night and go to an 11:30 AM wedding in Atlanta on Saturday.

It actually went better than I thought.

After work, Tara and Reggie of the band-I-have-yet-to-see-or-hear Sankofa met up at House of Brews and had a couple of drinks. This was the only flaw in the plan because it almost had dire consequences later. We headed over to Madison Square Garden, just in time to see Cat Power open. She was kind of awful. Her set seemed rushed. I fell asleep towards the end.

Finally Interpol came on around 10:35 PM. They were great but the venue didn’t do them any favors. The sound seemed off. I would have rather seen them in a smaller place like Bowery Ballroom. But that is not a knock on Interpol because they did every song I would have wanted them too and more.

So we got out of there around midnight. I rushed home and threw my suitcase on my bed. I shaved and showered, packed my bag and chilled to watch the Yankees-Red Sox highlights (Take that, Papelbon!) over and over until it was time to go.

I got on the subway and just caught 3:06 to Jamaica so I can catch the AirTrain to JFK. Unfortunately, this was what it commonly known as the Drunk Train because this is the train that all the Long Islanders who were out drinking their asses off catch before the 90 minute LIRR train break (Consequently, the first train after the break is called the Sleep Train because no one is awake on that having been forced to hang out in the city too long for missing the Drunk Train). As annoying as it was to have eight drunk girls screaming about how they this-that-and-the-other with guys in the club, it did prove useful. The drinks I had earlier were making me sleepy and passed out briefly. I was startled out of sleep when another group of drunk girls through a bag of McDonald’s fries at the group of girls sitting behind me. A fight was about to break out when my stop arrived.

I checked in (after another nap), got some Burger King breakfast and waited for the plane to board. AGAIN, I fell asleep, this time waking up right before the last group of people were boarding the plane. I was actually the last one to get on the plane. I got another 90 minutes of sleep on the flight.

We got to Atlanta 20 minutes early, took a cab to the hotel, checked in and I was all set. I wouldn’t sit down because if I fell asleep that would be it.

We got to the wedding which was really nice and brief (my favorite kind of weddings) an the reception was at th 755 Club at Turner Field. It was a little too baller for me. I feel like “Good Life” from Kanye West and T-Pain should have been playing as we were entering the reception. All and all, it was fun times.

We got back to the hotel, I changed back to my jeans and proceeded to sleep for an hour before we made a quick Chik-Fil-A run (there is no way I go to Atlanta and NOT get some Chik-Fil-A) then I headed back to the hotel and passed out until it was time to get up and catch my 10:45 AM flight.

All and all, it was fun times. Plus, I don’t want to toot my horn but I looked pretty damn good in my suit.

Feist at Town Hall NYC

June 12, 2007
I wish I got a better picture

Goes without saying she was great. Such a beautiful voice. It was a fun show and Kristy and I had awesome seats (third row).

My favorite songs she did were “So Sorry”, “I Feel It All”, “Lover’s Spit” (with Kevin Drew from Broken Social Scene on keys), “Sea Lion Woman” and “Let It Die”.

Björk at Radio City Music Hall

May 3, 2007

What a weird, awesome woman

So Bill & I went to her Radio City Music Hall show. I expected she would be doing mostly songs from her new album, Volta. So I was pretty pleased when she essentially ran through the greatest hits, sans “Hyperballad” which is probably my favorite Björk ever so that was disappointing.

She came out with the same horn section that she did for her recent Saturday Night Live appearance.

This was the setlist:
“Earth Intruders”
“Venus As A Boy”
“Aurora”
“I See Who You Are”
“Oceania”
“Dull Flame of Desire”
“All Is Full of Love”
“Pleasure Is All Mine”
“Pagan Poetry”
“Joga”
“Where Is the Line?”
“Army of Me”
“Innocence”
“Wanderlust”
“Pluto”
“Anchor Song”
“Declare Independence”

I’m always amazed at how powerful her voice is and how she’s been able to maintain it it. Especially when she says “thank you” after every song with a voice of a ten year old at a spelling bee and is dancing around stage like Abigail Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine.

The funniest moment was when some fan tried to get on stage and dance along with Björk. Radio City Music Hall security does not fuck around. That guy took two hops on stage before he was taken down and dragged off the stage on his stomach.

All and all, a great night.

Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins at Town Hall

October 14, 2006

She was great. Better than on the album.

That’s all I’ve really got to say on that except get her album if you don’t already have it.

Actually two things…

You ever hear a song that you liked in the album but it didn’t necessarily stand out to you…until you hear it live? That said, after the show, “Born Secular” became my favorite song on the album.

Also, if anyone has a live .mp3 of “Acid Tongue”, let me know.

Fiona Apple & Damien Rice at Jones Beach Theater

July 23, 2006

So after my friend and I did a couple of No Rain dances, we manage to avoid the torrential downpour that The Weather Channel all but guaranteed.

We got there early and we’re reading the program when all of the sudden, music starts playing. Apparently David Garza wanted to surprise us. If David Garza is a really talented guy, I was not sold after that performance. He did a real quick opening set- 4 songs. The two highlights being his first song, “Song for Ann Marie” (if anyone has this on .mp3, hook me up) and halfway through his second song, he sang “I just changed my tune/I forgot what I was supposed to say”.

Anyway, he came and went.

Then Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan and the band came out. It was kind of weird because they performed in front of Fiona’s set that was covered in tarps so it looked like they weren’t even supposed to be on stage. Nonetheless, it was an amazing set. Damien Rice is one of those singers who sounds the same live or recorded. Actually, I kinda prefer him live. Equally amazing was the voice of Lisa Hannigan. I really hope she comes out with an album of her own some day although they make a great team. So he did his set (Another request: if anyone has an live .mp3 of “Acidental Babies” or “Rootless Tree”, send it this way) and everybody was loving it and cheering and then he said Thank you and goodnight. And a near riot broke out. He didn’t perform “The Blower’s Daughter”. Apparently we were sitting in the Damien Rice Fan Club section because everyone freaked out. A few minutes ago, I thought they were going to cry and orgasm at the same time and now they wanted his blood. “Did we miss it?” “What happened?” “How could he not sing my favorite song?” “I don’t even like Fiona Apple” And a whole bunch of them left never to return. I can’t believe they spent all that money JUST to see Damien Rice (and presumably David Garza). Weird.

A little while afterwards, Fiona Apple’s set started. She was one piano and it did not start off well. Her voice sounded as if she had swallowed Spike from Gremlins whole and he was trying to escape while she sang. The first two songs were off and my friend and I gave each other the “Uh Oh. Could we be in for a Fiona Breakdown?” look. Luckily, she got off the piano and opted to stand and sing and DANCE. Oh did she dance. She definitely went to the Thom Yorke School of Stage Dancing. It was a combination of her fighting ghosts on stage and her beings chased by a swarm of killer bees with the occasional “AH! There’s a spider on my right leg.” It was amazing and worth the price of admission alone. Anyway, dancing aside, she did a beautiful set and I can now cross her off the lists of artists I want to see live.
