Don’t Call Me During…: Fall 2012 – Thursdays

8:00 pm: Last Resort (ABC, 9/27)
Shawn Ryan (The Shield) on network TV?  I’m in. Having Andre Braugher doesn’t hurt either.  It’s a shame that this probably won’t last past the first season in this absolutely brutal timeslot.

8:00 pm: The Big Bang Theory (CBS; 9/27)
It’s not as funny as it used to be (too much Jim Parsons but an Emmy will do that) but last season’s emphasis on the three female characters as a separate group – Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Amy (Mayim Balik) – gave the show new life.

New Girl: “CeCe Crashes” (S01E05)

Is New Girl smarter than I think it is? On the surface, the show looks like it blowing it’s “two of our castmembers slowly start to fall in love” wad early like it’s suffering from premature infatuation. We’ve spent most of the episodes in this young season pairing Jess up with Nick in various situations. Now the show, through CeCe, confronts the idea that Nick could like Jess. At first I was getting concerned but then I thought maybe they know what they are doing. Maybe they are addressing this now so it can be dropped for future episodes only to be revisited when enough time (2-3 seasons) have gone by. I guess it remains to be seen.

Don’t Call Me During…: Fall 2011 Edition

Why can't I find a date?

Since I’ve moved to Los Angeles, the way I watch television has changed.  I no longer have cable and rely mainly on the Internet (some means more legal than others).  I’ve been fairly successful in keeping up with my shows without a DVR but the hassle of shows building up on my hard drive has made me quick to drop shows.

As I started contemplating this post, I bragged to myself that I could cut my viewing hours down to maybe 15 hours.  The new crop of shows are not that appealing and most of the shows I currently watch I’m not completely enamored with. I’ll also admit that shows that Cindy and I aren’t both into are less likely to be watched regularly.  Fall TV hours are 22.5 right now but by November, I think I can get to the 15 hours I so desire.

Since I don’t watch these shows when they air on TV, no point in listing times.  New shows in bold.

TV Power Rankings: 12/6 – 12/12

Sorry this is so late (all three of you who care).  I was in England this weekend visiting my pseudo-godson, Troy. He’s better than TV.

I’m not doing Worst Show of the Week anymore because usually when I watch something bad, I push it right out of my head and it’s hard to recall later.  But if you really want to know, odds are the worst thing I watched every week is going to be Saturday Night Live.

The Power Rankings: (may contain mild spoilers)

10. Better Off Ted (Episode: “Love Blurts”) – Not the best BOT episode but I’m just happy it’s back.

9. The Big Bang Theory (Episode: “The Gorilla Experiment”) – Sheldon trying to teach Penny basic physics? Why wasn’t this funnier?

8. Gossip Girl (Episode: “The Debarted”) – I had to steal this from NY Magazine’s weekly Daily Intel recap: “Serena walks out of the country house with her baggage and no car in sight, just planning to “find a cab” in the middle of bumfuck Nassau County. God, she’s amazing.”

TV Power Rankings: 11/15 – 11/21

Worst Show: The Cleveland Show (Episode: “Ladies’ Night”) – I watch The Cleveland Show afraid that if I miss it, they will finally have a funny episode.  I’m still waiting for that funny episode.

The Power Rankings: (may contain mild spoilers)

10.  How I Met Your Mother (Episode: “The Playbook”) – While I enjoy Barney’s single shenanigans, I’m still slightly bothered how the Barney/Robin relationship which the show invested us all in has dissipated so quickly.

9. Parks and Recreation (Episode: “Hunting Trip”) – This is slowly becoming my favorite show on NBC Thursday nights.

8. It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia (Episode: “The D.E.N.N.I.S. System”)

TV Power Rankings: 11/08 – 11/14

Worst Show of Last Week: Saturday Night Live (Host: Taylor Swift) – Aside from her monologue song which was cute, this was another terrible episode.  Are they even trying anymore?

The Power Rankings: (may contain mild spoilers)

10. South Park (Episode: “Dances With Smurfs”) – I’m afraid they may have ruined Avatar for me.

9. 30 Rock (Episode: “The Problem Solvers”) – It’s still not great but it’s been getting better. I’m a sucker for any mocking of Canada

8. The Office (Episode: “Murder”) – I’m glad Ed Helms is getting a bigger role this season.

TV Power Rankings: 11/01 – 11/07

Worst Show of Last Week: V (Episode: “Pilot”) – There wasn’t any particularly bad television this week but this was more like a lost opportunity.  They rushed so much of the show’s premise robbing the show of any tension or character development.  I think it’s more of a lack of faith in a TV viewer to stick around to see where’s something going without spelling everything out right away.

The Power Rankings: (may contain mild spoilers)

10. The League (Episode: “The Bounce Test”) -I think FX has finally found a show to follow It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.  I wonder how many eskimo brothers I have.

9. FlashForward (Episode: “The Gift”) – I was ready to give up on this show but this was the best the show has been since the first half of the pilot. The suicide is a bit of a game changer so now what?

8. Community (Episode: “Home Economics”) – I officially have a crush on Alison Brie (she has also been great as Trudy on Mad Men).  I hope this isn’t the last we see of the Pierce/Vaughn war. Continue reading

TV Power Rankings: 10/25 – 10/31

So I decided to give myself a new project.  I’m going to try to rank the top 10 shows I watched on a week by week basis. Since I usually don’t finish watching a given week’s shows until Sunday, this will probably run late. (I watch over 25 hours of TV a week).

Worst Show of Last Week: Cougar Town (Episode: “A Woman in Love (It’s Not Me)”) – The scary thought is that before I remembered I watched Cougar Town (which will probably always be the worst show I watch every week), I was going to say 30 Rock.

The Power Rankings: (may contain mild spoilers) Continue reading

Don’t Call Me During…: Fall 2009-10 Edition

This was easily the hardest TV schedule I’ve ever had to put together.  I actually thought I was going to be watching less television than ever but then I got to Thursday.  Thank God for Hulu and bittorrent, otherwise I don’t know what I’d do*.

First let’s say goodbye to the shows that won’t be returning from the last schedule: Continue reading
