Prometheus, Ridley Scott’s kinda/sorta prequel to his 1979 sci-fi classic, Alien, is visually stunning but surprisingly empty. I really wanted to love this movie more than I actually did. It felt like two films uncomfortably mashed together. One film is a straight-up Alien prequel with the typical “trapped in an alien enviornment/no one can hear you scream in outer space” tropes but with Scott’s flair and panache (this is probably from the original script by Jon Spaihts). The other film, likely from Damon Lindelof’s rewrite, is a philosophical about the nature of our creation and what makes us human. The movie asks all the big questions like “Who made us?” and “Where did we come from?” but when it comes to answering those questions, well…let’s just say you can take the writer out of Lost but you can’t take Lost out of the writer.

Movies I’m Interested In Seeing: Summer 2012
Despite having movies I have been anticipating for years, this looks like a pretty lame year for summer tentpole films. This year, “summer” starts on March 4th. I don’t imagine that I’ll be seeing a lot of movies this summer but I am definitely going to try and see these five.
5. The Amazing Spider-Man (July 3)
Even though Spider-Man 3 was pretty bad, I still hate how quickly they rebooted it (I know there are legal reasons they needed to do it but still). I think Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone (as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy respectively) are well cast and appreciate that they are going back to the mechanical web shooters (which highlights Parker’s intelligence) but tying Parker’s parents into the origin and that horrible suit have me shaking my head. All I know if J. Jonah Jameson appears in the sequels, they better get J.K. Simmons back.
Movie of the Week: X-Men: First Class
When I first heard they were making X-Men: First Class, I had absolutely no interest in seeing it. The X-Men franchise, which started out great, had fooled me twice with X-Men: The Last Stand (which should have been my last stand) and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Then the trailers started coming out and I became intrigued. The more news I read and video I saw, the more I wanted to see it. So cheers to the advertising and PR campaign for the film. When the final credits rolled, I wasn’t completely disappointed but if I had gone with my initial feelings and caught it on Netflix, I wouldn’t have felt that bad.
