Lost Season Five: The Incident

theincident010

What I Liked:

  • Great acting all-around especially the tense shootout at the future Swan station
  • This season has been Josh Holloway’s moment to shine and he did not disappoint
  • Jack and Sawyer come to full-fledged blows
  • Rose, Bernard and Vincent! I’m glad the writers effectively wrote them out of the show but in a completely satisfying way that was true to their character
  • We finally meet the infamous Jacob and see the four-toed statue (it appears to be Sobek)
  • I liked Jacob’s flashback showing him nudging Kate, Jack, Sayid, Sawyer, Locke and Hurley along.
  • It also appears we have met the true villain of Lost (I’ll call him “Black” from this point forward because it couldn’t have been a coincidence that he was wearing black while Jacob was in white during the first scene)
  • Sun found Charlie’s DriveShaft ring!
  • I’m glad that the “what lies in the shadow of the statue” people are the good guys too.
  • We finally know what lies in the shadow of the statue: “That which will save us all.” (translated from Latin)
  • I knew it was Locke’s body in that box!
  • If this is the end for Elizabeth Mitchell (it appears so),  she went out with a bang figuratively and literally. I don’t think I ever wanted a person to be saved during a cliched “don’t let me go or I’ll fall” scene than I wanted Juliet to be saved

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Sayid bleeding to death in the back of the van and I have the radioactive core of a hydrogen bomb, sure, I have five minutes to chat
  • The fact that Kate played even a minuscule factor in Jack’s decision to set off the H-Bomb made me groan and wish that Jack got shot.
  • I hated Juliet’s flip-flop to go along with Jack’s plan because of Sawyer’s glance to Kate during Bernard’s speech about being with the one you love. But I was okay with it more than I was Jack.

Lines of the Night:

  • “They come, fight, they destroy, they corrupt. It always ends the same.”
“It only ends once. Anything that happens before that, it’s just progress.” – Black and Jacob
  • “If Jack wants to blow up the island, good for Jack” – Sawyer on the submarine
  • “We traveled back 30 years in time, and you’re still trying to find ways to shoot each other.” -Rose
  • “In my experience, the people who go out of their way to tell you they’re the good guys are the bad guys.” – Frank Lapidus
  • “That which will save us all.” -Alpert giving the correct answer to”What lies in the shadow of the statue”
  • “I’m beginning to think that you make up these rules as you go along.” – Locke (NotLocke?) to Richard
  • “I don’t know…but his Korean is excellent.” – Jin regarding Jacob’s message to him and Sun at their wedding
  • “Well, it’s a wonderful foot, Richard ,but what does it have to do with Jacob?” – Locke to Jacob
  • “I don’t speak destiny” – Sawyer to Jack
  • “Nothing can save me” – Sayid
  • “Has it occurred to any of you that perhaps your little buddy [Jack] is going to cause the thing he’s trying to prevent? … I’m glad you’ve all thought this through.” – Miles saying what I have been thinking for the last two weeks
  • “This don’t look like LAX.” – Sawyer after the H-Bomb doesn’t blow
  • “Oh…so after all this time, you decided to stop ignoring me.” Ben to Jacob
  • “They’re…coming.” – Jacob’s last(?) words

Questions:

  • Does Lost have the same casting agent that Deadwood did (Black is also a Deadwood alum)
  • Who is Black? What is his relationship to Jacob?
  • What is this game between Jacob and Black and what are the rules?
  • How did Jacob bring the Black Rock to the island?
  • Are these the same rules that Ben and Widmore are abiding by?
  • What’s the loophole that Black found to kill Jacob?
  • What is Jacob?
  • Where did all these Others come from? They are all relativley young
  • How is Jacob travel from the island to other parts in the world?
  • Why was Jacob visiting Jack, Sawyer, Kate, Locke, Jin, Sun and Sayid at key points in their lives? (The wikipedia page on Sobek says He was also said to call on suitable gods and goddesses required for protecting people in situation, effectively having a more distant role, nudging things along, rather than taking an active part.”)
  • Why did Jacob directly appeal to Hurley?
  • What’s in the guitar case?
  • When did Jack Shepard turn into Jack Bauer? He was killing these guys with one shot.
  • Does the house in Dharmaville that Richard broke the wall into eventually become Ben’s house?
  • What is Lapidus a candidate for?
  • Are Rose and Bernard Adam and Eve?
  • Did Rose and Bernard work out a deal with The Others that allowed them to live peacefully on the beach?
  • Was Jacob trying to make sure Nadia got hit or that Sayid didn’t?
  • Was Nadia’s death intentional as Ben said?
  • Did Jacob’s touch bring Locke back to life or just wake him up?
  • What does the break in the ash around Jacob’s cabin mean?
  • How long has Jacob not been using his cabin?
  • Who was using it instead? Black?
  • If it was Black, does that call into question a) the time Locke saw him with Ben and b) the true nature of ghost Christian and/or Claire?
  • What year is it when Ilana is in the hospital?
  • What happened to Ilana that she’s bandaged up?
  • How did Ben get to be leader of the Others if he’s never seen him?
  • Why is Ben able to kill Jacob when Locke (notLocke) can’t
  • Did Eloise and/or Widmore meet Jacob?
  • How did Black die or lose his physical form?
  • If Locke’s body is in the box, is Locke really dead and it’s Black in his body?
  • How much of this did Jacob know was going to happen?
  • What does the tapestry that Jacob wove mean?
  • The conversation between Black and Jacob infers that this conflict has happened before. Has it and when?
  • Is Jacob really dead? What does that mean for the island?
  • When Jacob says “They’re coming,” who is he referring to?
  • So Jacob’s dead, the h-bomb exploded, now what?

  1. I have no words for this episode…but you summed up my feelings pretty well.
    a) i hope nothing happens to Sayid. He’s one of my favorite characters.
    b) Did this somehow remind you of the ending to the Sopranos?

  2. You forgot that Jacob visited Sun and Jin at their wedding. That was a pretty significant life event.

My friends were trying to figure out if the visits occurred during a particular sing (either from the 10 commandments or 7 deadly sins), but it doesn’t pan out. We also noted that he gave them all something or actually touched them.

I think the loophole Black found was manipulating the free will of humans/mortals so they would do the killing. Jacob appealed to Ben’s free will (“you always have a choice”) and got nearer to him even though he was holding the knife. Jacob seemed indifferent to Jacob probably because he was bad. Who knows…

I think Black might be Smokey. Black had to do a lot of work to get to kill Jacob. Taking on Alex’s form and manipulating Ben could have been one of those things. Locke/NotLocke was nowhere around during that part.

I looked up some stuff on the biblical Jacob. He had a fraternal twin brother, Esau. Jacob was the second born. They didn’t have a good relationship, and each was favored by a different parent. Isaac favored Esau because he was a hunter and man of the wild, or something like that. Rebecca favored Jacob. When she was pregnant she’d had a prophecy. Via wikipedia:

She received the prophecy that twins were fighting in her womb and would continue to fight all their lives, and after they became two separate nations. The prophecy also said that the older would serve the younger; its statement “one people will be stronger than the other” has been taken to mean that the two nations would never gain power simultaneously: when one fell, the other would rise, and vice versa.

  3. I wonder how the conflict between Ben and Charles Widmore ties into what’s going on with Jacob and Black.

R.I.P. Juliet, you will be missed.
