My Favorites of 2012

Favorite Television Series: Breaking Bad

There were a lot of good series this year – Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Parks and Recreation – but none really had an amazing standout year.  However, I found myself anticipating each episode of season 5.1 of Breaking Bad. While it lacked a main villain like season four, it was still fun to watch the evolution of Heisenberg.

Favorite Television Episode: “Blackwater” (Game of Thrones, Season Two, Episode Nine)

While the second season of Game of Thrones was a little slow, everything was building up to this episode and it didn’t disappoint. Between the large scale battle when Stannis Baratheon’s forces arrived at King’s Landings to the outstanding performances from Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey, “Blackwater” showed the all the possibilities of having Game of Thrones on HBO.

Favorite Film: The Avengers

While I still haven’t seen any of the top Oscar contending movies, I know none of them will replicate the feeling I had watching The Avengers for the first time. It’s not the best movie based on comic book characters (it’s still The Dark Knight) but it’s definitely the best comic book movie. I can watch the last 35 minutes every day for the rest of my life.

Favorite Album: The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do by Fiona Apple

There were a lot of good albums this year – good kid, m.A.A.d city, channel ORANGE, Bloom – but any year a new Fiona Apple album comes out, it is going to be my favorite. Luckily, it was a great album. It was a little depressing so I couldn’t listen to it on repeat too much.

Favorite Song: “Get Free” by Major Lazer featuring Amber of Dirty Projectors

This gives me high hopes for their next album.

Favorite Comic Book Series: Saga by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples

I was skeptical at the beginning of this sci-fi Romeo and Juliet but Vaughn’s ability to establish the world is writing in without it dragging has hooked me.  This is shaping up to be better than Y The Last Man but only time can tell.
