J.J. Abrams will direct the next “Star Wars” film for Disney, taking stewardship of one of Hollywood’s most iconic and lucrative film franchises, an individual with knowledge of the production told TheWrap. (Full story)
You’d think I would be thrilled. I have enjoyed all of J.J. Abrams films and has already proven his ability to handle science fiction on a large scale (Star Trek) and more personal one (Super 8). This just seems like a really uninspired selection.
I initially scoffed at the idea of Ben Affleck directing Star Wars but if he had been selected, we would have no idea what to expect. He’s proven himself to be a great director so it would at least be intriguing to see how Affleck would handle this universe. Personally, I was hoping Brad Bird was going to be the choice. Instead, Lucasfilms/Disney went with the safest possible choice. They basically said, “We need to do for Star Wars what Paramount did for Star Trek. Let’s just get the guy who did that.” Set your lightsabers to “lens flare.”
On a slightly more geeky note, isn’t directing Star Wars after directing two Star Trek movies like winning the World Series with the Red Sox and then joining the Yankees in the offseason?
