It’s All Connected

Over the holidays, HBO ran a marathon of arguably the greatest television drama of all-time, The Wire, remastered in HD.  As a result, my Twitter timeline was inundated with some of my favorite quotes. It inspired me to use some of them to write about Xavi since I haven’t done that in a long time.

“See, the thing is you only got to fuck up once. Be a little slow, be a little late, just once. And how you ain’t gonna never be slow? Never be late? You can’t plan for no shit like this man, it’s life. Yeah. It scares me.” – Avon Barksdale

Xavi hasn’t had any major injuries thus far (*knocks on wood*) but I don’t know how long this good luck will last.  Since my mother got Xavi to start walking (and then promptly left) the Monday after his first birthday, the entire apartment looks like a death trap to me.  Long gone are the days when you could put him down somewhere,  turn around and, at most, he moved ten feet. Now, you can only leave him out of your sight for five seconds before he’s getting into some trouble whether it’s pulling something off the kitchen counter or trying to climb up a chair to get something off the table.

He’s also very aware when you’re not paying attention to him.  If he thinks I’m distracted, he tries to get away with something.  There are numerous times when I’ve raced over or yelled out “Xavi!” and just prevent something bad from happening to him.

But he’s only getting faster and I’m only getting slower.

“The game ain’t in me no more. None of it.” – Dennis “Cutty” Wise

After the holidays, everyone asked “How was your New Year’s Eve?” I was in bed by midnight…East Coast time. Actually, I was asleep by 8:45 PM only to be woken up by people on the East Coast sending me “Happy New Year” text messages.

I guess the days of partying all day and staying out all night are over.  I can’t even completely blame Xavi for this one.  I just don’t have the energy anymore.

“You want it to be one way…but it’s the other way” – Marlo Stansfield

He hasn’t hit the “Terrible Twos” yet but Xavi definitely throws his fair share of tantrums.  They are usually for one of two reasons.  Either, someone is taking away something he probably shouldn’t have (keys, broom, trash) or someone is stopping him from doing something he’s not supposed to do (touching the trash can, climbing on top of a chair or table, etc.)

I look forward to being able to explain to him why he can and cannot do certain things but, from what I’ve been told, it is even more frustrating when they know and still don’t care.

“How my hair look, Mike?” – Felicia “Snoop” Pearson

For better or worse, I’m in charge of Xavi’s hair. Some days it looks better than others.  I’ve looked up blogs and watched videos about how handle curly hair like his but no one has an answer to the one problem I’ve had: “How do I get him to sit still through all that?”

“Comes a day you’re gonna have to decide whether it’s about you or about the work.” – Cedric Daniels

Sometimes when I’m alone, I get wrapped up in how tired I am and how hard I’ve worked.  Then I remember that it’s not just me.  Cindy’s works just as hard (probably harder) and is just as tired (definitely more tired).

It’s not about me anymore, it’s about us, more importantly, him. And I better get ready because Xavi’s comin’!
